Press Release: Lawmakers urge governor to veto private tuition voucher bill

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Lawmakers who represent the school districts most affected by Missouri’s controversial student transfer law today urged Gov. Jay Nixon to veto Senate Bill 493, which while touted as a fix for the transfer law fails to resolve the problems with the law and instead would use public education taxes to support private schools.

“Senate Bill 493 does nothing to help the students of Normandy and Riverview Gardens and is the first step toward the privatization of public education in Missouri,” said state Rep. Tommie Pierson, D-St. Louis.

Pierson, who is chairman of the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus, represents the Riverview Gardens School District.

“Gov. Jay Nixon has strongly indicated he shares our conviction that public education taxes should be spent only on public education and that he will veto SB 493,” Pierson said. “Once the governor formally receives the bill, we encourage him to veto it without delay.”
