Missouri Legislative Black Caucus elects leadership

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Legislative Black Caucus has elected new leadership for the 2015 legislative session, which begins Jan. 7.

State Rep. Brandon Ellington, D-Kansas City, will serve as Black Caucus chairman. Ellington, who was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2011, previously had served as caucus vice-chair.

“The events in Ferguson have helped people of all races and political philosophies to understand the urgent need for social justice-minded reform in Missouri,” Ellington said. “The Missouri Black Legislative Caucus will take a leading role in the General Assembly’s efforts to reshape various aspects of state law to reflect the lessons learned in recent months.”

The Black Caucus also elected several members of its leadership team.

State Rep. Karla May, D-St. Louis, will serve as caucus vice chair. May was first elected to the House in 2010.

State Rep. Kim Gardner, D-St. Louis, will serve as caucus secretary, a position she also held last year. Gardner was first elected to the House in 2012.

State Rep Clem Smith, D-Velda Village Hills, will serve as caucus treasurer. Smith was first elected to the House in 2010.
