Former Missouri Treasurers Steelman and Bailey Endorse Eric Schmitt

Glendale, Mo. – Two prominent former Missouri Treasurers Sarah Steelman and Wendell Bailey are calling for the election of Eric Schmitt, a leading voice for tax reform and author of two of the largest tax cuts in state history, to be the next Treasurer for Missouri.

Steelman and Bailey said Schmitt has the record of achievement, background and integrity to serve the people of Missouri well as the state’s chief financial officer. As the 2016 election cycle begins, Schmitt now has the endorsement of both living Missouri Republicans who have served the state as Treasurer.

“Missourians have an opportunity to elect someone they can trust to protect the revenue and investments of state government,” said Sarah Steelman, who served as Missouri Treasurer from 2005-2009. “As an economist and former treasurer, I know the skills and background required for this job and Eric Schmitt has demonstrated throughout his years in public service that he is a true guardian of the taxpayers’ money. I am going to do everything I can to help elect him as our next Treasurer.”

“I am urging Missourians to join me in supporting Eric Schmitt for Treasurer,” said Wendell Bailey, who served as Missouri Treasurer from 1985-1993. “Missouri families deserve a Treasurer who understands the responsibilities of the office and has a record of achievement that matches those responsibilities. Eric Schmitt has helped return money back to Missouri taxpayers with two of the largest tax cuts in history and he will make certain the dollars we do send to Jefferson City are protected.”

“It’s an honor to have the endorsement of Sarah Steelman and Wendell Bailey, both of whom served Missouri with distinction in the Treasurer’s office and provided conservative stewardship of taxpayer dollars,” said Eric Schmitt. “Their support and counsel will be an important part of this campaign and I look forward to working with them in the months ahead.”

Steelman and Bailey are joining a big coalition of Missouri State Senators and Representatives from across the state who endorsed Eric Schmitt for Treasurer. Last month, 54 State Representatives and 19 State Senators announced their support. These high-profile endorsements so early in the election cycle highlight the far-reaching support for Schmitt.

As State Senator, Schmitt has been credited for his leadership as a next-generation conservative, bringing new energy and bold ideas to the forefront and seeking a new era of governance in which initiatives to create private sector jobs and restore fiscal responsibility will replace the big government model that has prevented growth and prosperity for Missourians.

Schmitt authored two of the largest tax cuts in state history. Both were enacted into law. To help create jobs and economic growth for the state, Schmitt sponsored a significant tax cut for small businesses, lowering the tax burden for all small businesses by 25 percent over five years.

He also sponsored legislation ending a double taxation known as the “corporate franchise tax” that was preventing Missouri businesses from expanding and discouraging out-of-state businesses from relocating here. Schmitt was also a key leader in enacting a significant tax cut for individuals and families, reducing their tax burden from 6 percent to 5.5 percent.
