PRESS RELEASE: Right to Work discussion moves to the Missouri Senate

Right to Work discussion moves to the Missouri Senate

JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri House of Representatives has approved Right to Work legislation, sending the bill to the Missouri Senate for discussion.

Rep. Eric Burlison, a Republican from Springfield, sponsored the Right to Work legislation, which would protect Missouri workers from being forced to join and financially support unions. The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry strongly supports Right to Work as Missouri seeks to attract jobs and economic investment.

“Without Right to Work protections, Missouri is losing the battle for jobs. Often, we are not even part of the discussion when businesses look to expand,” said Daniel P. Mehan, Missouri Chamber President and CEO. “Today’s House vote brings Missouri closer to truly competing for jobs in today’s competitive business climate. I’d like to thank Speaker of the House Rep. John Diehl, sponsor Rep. Eric Burlison and every House member who supported this effort. Now we will take this discussion to the Missouri Senate and continue our work to make 2015 the year when Missouri finally becomes a Right to Work state.”

Currently, 24 states have passed Right to Work laws. The Missouri Chamber will seek strong support for Right to Work in the Missouri Senate in an effort to establish enough support to override a potential veto by the governor.

“We appreciate leaders in the Missouri House of Representatives for making Right to Work a priority in 2015 and we look forward to continuing this conversation in the Senate,” said Jay Atkins, Missouri Chamber General Counsel and Director of Governmental Affairs. “Right to Work will make Missouri a more competitive state and help us create and attract jobs for the future.”

Rep. Burlison’s proposal is House Committee Substitute for House Bills 116 and 569.

The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry (www.mochamber.com) was founded in 1923 and is the largest business organization in Missouri, representing almost 3,000 employers, providing more than 425,000 jobs for Missourians.
