Nixon names Nicole Galloway to state auditor post

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Nicole Galloway, Boone County’s treasurer, accepted Gov. Jay Nixon’s appointment to serve as the next State Auditor of Missouri following the suicide of sitting auditor Tom Schweich.

Nixon and Galloway both offered sympathies for the family of Schweich as well as Schweich’s former staffer, Spence Jackson, whose suicide one month following Schweich’s rocked Missouri politicos.

“Every Missourian should know that this office will continue to hold itself — and others — to the highest standards of excellence and accountability,” Nixon told reporters. “The people of Missouri have my commitment that I will be an independent watchdog that reviews all levels of government with even-handedness and integrity.”

Galloway, 32, will formally become the youngest statewide official in Missouri when she takes the oath of office during the week of April 27. She’s served as Boone County treasurer since 2011 when she was appointed to fill a vacant post. Galloway won re-election in 2012 and is a certified CPA and fraud examiner.

“Integrity, honesty and trust must go hand-in-hand with the Missouri Auditor’s office,” Galloway said before thanking Nixon for “placing me in a position to do important work for the citizens of the state.”

Galloway has long been rumored to be mulling a run for statewide office in 2016. Her appointment means she’ll have to run for re-election in 2018, something she says she fully intends to do.

“I wouldn’t have accepted this appointment unless it was something I was prepared to fully commit to,” Galloway said.

Over the next week or two, Galloway said she’ll be speaking with current auditor staff before formally stepping down from her position in Boone County.
