Missouri Daughters of the American Revolution honor patriot in Capitol

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution added the name of Jonathon Elston to a plaque in the Capitol that recognizes Revolutionary War patriots buried in Missouri Friday afternoon.

The group, which says it is committed to historic preservation, education and patriotism, held the unveiling of the marker in the Missouri State Capitol rotunda.

Renee Pace of Eldon, a historian for the Missouri DAR chapter, noted that Elston was a soldier in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

“In the past, if we’ve known of ancestors that are close enough to travel and come, sometimes they’ll read the biography, but we weren’t able to locate anybody for Jonathan,” Pace said.

Pace added the Missouri chapter had to wait for the national organization to approve Elston’s marker on the plaque. The verification process can take as long as six months to ensure that a person being honored was either a soldier or a patriot during the Revolutionary War.

“Our guidelines for adding names to any kind of a plaque: we can add five per year,” Pace said. “He was one of several that we’ve had on file, and we just hadn’t gotten to putting him in yet.”

Pace believes the group can add three more names next spring.
