The total amount of unspent funds Kinder is returning for Fiscal Year 2015, which ended June 30, is $79,802, with represents 17.5 percent of his budget. First elected lieutenant governor in 2004, Kinder has returned, on average, more than 5 percent of his budget each year, even as those budgets shrank.

“Since I was elected in 2004, I have returned unspent funds from my office budget every year, even when the budget decreased significantly,” Kinder said. “This year, I will return more than 17 percent of the overall budget, almost $80,000.”

As a state Senator from 1992-2004, Kinder earned a reputation as a budget hawk. When he was elected President Pro Tem in 2001, one of the first things he did was cut the Senate budget by almost 20 percent.

“As elected representatives of the people of Missouri, I believe it’s important for state officeholders to be good stewards of taxpayers’ money,” he added. “I will continue to look for ways to save wherever I can.”
