TWMP: Special guest Jason Kander, RTW and the stadium in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS – Current Missouri Secretary of State and Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Jason Kander joined Scott Faughn on This Week in Missouri Politics to discuss Kander’s military service, his opposition to the Iran deal and other hot-button issues around the state.

They also took focus on Kander’s current race against U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Missouri, in what looks to be an essentially primary-less race for Blunt’s Senate seat. Kander believes the disappointment with Washington politics could help propel him into the position.

“People agree with me that Washington is completely broken right now and you can’t change Washington if you keep sending the same people there,” Kander said.

Faughn was later joined by the Opinion Maker panel consisting of GPS Impact principal Mindy Mazur, State Rep. John Wiemann, chief of staff for Sen. Ryan Silvey Aaron Willard and The Missouri Times’ own Collin Reischman.

TWMP is broadcast in 2/3 of Missouri. For listing information, please visit twmp.tv.

Highlights from the panel

“We should give the governor credit for trying to assert his leadership and through administrative means do something that would try to empower the St. Louis area.” – Mazur, on Gov. Jay Nixon’s continued fight to build a new NFL stadium in St. Louis.

“One of the underlying problems with this is that they’re talking about bringing on a massive amount of public debt and no input from the people and actually gone out of their way to prevent people and citizens from voting on this.” – Willard, on problems with Gov. Nixon’s stadium funding initiatives.

“The problem is that this is a federal race and they are looking at control of the U.S. Senate. and he’s not going to be able to get by without the liberal voting record he had. Jason Kander is going to have to stand on more than just his resume.” – Wiemann on Kander’s electability.

“That’s because he wants it to be as clear as possible that, ‘Yes, I’m a Democrat, but I’m not like the guy who’s running the country, because if I am, you’re probably not going to vote for me.'” – Reischman, on Kander’s opposition to Pres. Barack Obama’s Iran deal.
