PR: Black Caucus members express concerns to UM curators

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Members of the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus met with members of the University of Missouri System Board of Curators on Wednesday to express concern with the board’s lack of action to address documented racial disparities of so-called minorities on campus, including in the hiring, retention and promotion of black faculty and recruitment of black students.
For more than a year, Black Caucus members have had discussions with various members of the university administration and Board of Curators in an effort to improve race relations in the UM System.  Black Caucus members, however, have been extremely disappointed in the lack of empathy and concern the curators have shown when dealing with Title IX issues on their campuses.
“The UM Board of Curators’ lack of action shows there’s no genuine concern to address longstanding historical issues,” said Black Caucus Chairman Brandon Ellington, D-Kansas City. “It is our hope that with new leadership the curators will begin working to ensure that there are protocols and proper funding put in place to improve the university system and promote inclusion and diversity.”
