Longtime Supreme Court clerk announces retirement

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Supreme Court’s clerk has announced he will retire effective Jan. 1, 2017.

Bill Thompson has served the Supreme Court for almost 40 years, having worked there since June of 1978 as a staff attorney. He served as counsel for the body for 34 years before becoming clerk in 2011.

Chief Justice Patricia Breckenridge credited Thompson for his service to the court.

“Bill’s service to this Court over the years has been immeasurable,” she said. “He has been an invaluable resource not only to the Court’s judges and staff but also to judges throughout the state, especially to advise us in the intricacies of civil procedure.

“His leadership as counsel and then clerk has been dedicated to working in the best interests of the judiciary and the people of Missouri. While we will miss him tremendously, we wish Bill and his family the best in his well-earned retirement.”

Betsy AuBuchon will replace Thompson as clerk. AuBuchon has worked for the Supreme Court since 2012 when she was selected as commission counsel for the Judicial Finance Commission before she was promoted in less than a year to the newly created office of director of government relations and deputy counsel.

“I am honored by the opportunity the Court has given me and the confidence the judges have in me,” AuBuchon said. “I am thankful for the knowledge and support of the many wonderful employees at the Court and leaders throughout the judiciary.”
