Release: Governor’s, Legislators’ and Judges’ Day to be Celebrated at the Missouri State Fair

Throwback Thursday Promotion Offers Admission Discount

(SEDALIA, Mo.) – Visitors to the Missouri State Fair this Thursday, Aug. 18, will be welcomed by a great variety of both traditional and new events. The day will kick-off with the 64th Missouri Governor’s Ham Breakfast starting at 8 a.m., followed by the Missouri First Lady’s Pie Contest starting at 10 a.m. A new Throwback Thursday promotion will offer fairgoers $5 admission for adults, age 13 and over, and free admission for kids 12 and under, on this day.

“This Thursday will be a full day of Fair traditions, exciting entertainment and new activities,” Missouri State Fair Director Mark Wolfe said. “The Governor’s Ham Breakfast is a long-standing tradition that allows guests to celebrate the excellence of Missouri agriculture.”

Gov. Jay Nixon will be the keynote speaker at the breakfast, which will begin at 8 a.m. in the Director’s Tent. Standing room only tickets are available for $10 and include Fair admission for the day. Tickets can be purchased at the breakfast.

During the breakfast, the Grand Champion Ham, Reserve Grand Champion Ham, Grand Champion Slab of Bacon, and a limited edition commemorative belt buckle will be auctioned off. A new item, a homemade pie baked by Missouri First Lady Georganne Nixon, will also be part of the auction. The proceeds from the auction will be used to fund projects at the Missouri State Fair, such as scholarships for youth involved in agriculture and improvements to the fairgrounds.

The First Lady’s Pie Contest, sponsored by AgriMissouri and Starline Brass, will start at 10 a.m. in the Home Economics Building. Entrants will include amateur bakers of all ages competing in two categories, Soft Custard/Cream Pies and Fruit Pies. A Best of Show prize will also be awarded.

A new Throwback Thursday Scavenger Hunt will be offered Aug.18 in which fairgoers can participate. Scavenger Hunt forms will be available throughout the day at any of the Fair’s information booths. The Scavenger Hunt, sponsored by Bimbo Bakeries USA, can be completed at any time throughout the day, and must be turned in at the Touchstone Energy Stage at 6 p.m. to be eligible for the Ultimate Prize Pack, which includes 4 Unlimited Daily Deal Tickets to the 2017 Missouri State Fair.

Other highlights for the day include the Garden and Mini Rod Pull at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the State Fair Arena, sponsored by Husqvarna. The event is free for fairgoers. Newsboys with Hawk Nelson will take the Pepsi Grandstand Stage at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the concert are available at the Fair’s Box Office for $20 and $25.
