Release: Rep. Courtney Allen Curtis Approves of Governor Nixon’s Appointments, but Feels they are Ill Timed

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – After the recent ruling that the St. Louis Election Board violated the law during the August 2 primary, Rep. Courtney Allen Curtis felt that the new appointments Governor Nixon made are appropriate, but should have been done before this corruption transpired.

Both the chair and secretary were replaced on Monday, yet they were serving on expired terms. Rep. Curtis feels that this problem could have easily been avoided had the Governor been more efficient with filling both vacant positions and expired terms.

“Unfortunately, this is more of a PR move than anything sincere; and that is what we have come to expect from our current Missouri Governor. Replacing these positions in a much timelier manner could have avoided issues with absentee ballots or voter fraud; new board members may have wanted to change things or have caught things that weren’t compliant,” said Curtis, D-Ferguson. “Yet, we have a Governor who prefers to lead our state with a laissez-faire approach. This past session it was stated that there were around 1500 vacancies throughout the state. A bill was filed this year that would have required the governor to make appointments within 60 days. I added an amendment that would have shortened it to 30 days. These are pieces of legislation that shouldn’t have to even be filed. Is it that much to ask for accountability? I hope that our future governor will take an active role in working to prevent these issues instead of continually coming to our aid for mop-up duty.”

The new election is scheduled for September 16.
