Release: Gov. Nixon appoints St. Louis County attorney, former state representative Brian May as Circuit Judge for the 21st Circuit

JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Jay Nixon today appointed Brian H. May, of Eureka, as Circuit Judge for the 21st Judicial Circuit, which covers St. Louis County. The position became vacant through the retirement of the Honorable Robert S. Cohen.

May has been an attorney in the St. Louis area since 1990 and from 2001 to 2010 was a managing partner of the Yates & May law firm in Clayton. He has served in numerous positions within state government, most recently as regional director for the Missouri Governor’s Office and before that, with the Missouri Department of Labor. May also was a member of the Missouri Development Finance Board from 2009 to 2010, and was co-chair of the St. Louis County Council Reapportionment Commission in 2002.

May was elected state representative for the 108th District in the Missouri House of Representatives for four terms from 1993 to 2001, and served as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee for two terms. He obtained his law degree from Saint Louis University and his undergraduate degree from Harris-Stowe State University. May has served as the school board president of Most Sacred Heart School in Eureka and also was president of the school’s sports association.

“Through his many years of experience as an attorney and as a public servant, Brian May has a great depth of knowledge that will serve him well as a Circuit Judge,” Gov. Nixon said. “I am pleased to appoint him to serve the people of St. Louis County in this position.”

May was one of three applicants submitted to the Governor for consideration by the 21st Circuit Judicial Commission under the Missouri Nonpartisan Court Plan.
