Fitzwater pens letter urging McCaskill to confirm Pruitt

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. –  Following a major effort by members of the Republican Legislature last week, Rep. Travis Fitzwater, R-Holts Summit, wrote an open letter to U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill Wednesday asking her to confirm Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt as the new head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Although many Democrats and environmentalists fear Pruitt’s anti-regulatory bent makes him a danger to the nation’s wildlife, air and water resources, Republicans like Fitzwater say Pruitt will restore the EPA’s purpose and stop the harsh impositions on agriculture and industry the agency created under former President Barack Obama’s administration.

U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt is already a ‘yes’ vote on all of President Donald Trump’s nominees, but McCaskill has expressed reticence on most of Trump’s picks, including Pruitt.

Fitzwater urged her to consider him.

“As an expert in environmental, constitutional and regulatory law, Pruitt will not only bring the necessary expertise to the EPA, but also the requisite common sense to ensure a clean environment and a thriving economy,” he said.

The full letter can be read below.
