RELEASE: U.S. term limits resolution advances in Missouri Legislature

Jefferson City, MO – United for Missouri’s Executive Director Carl Bearden praised the Missouri State Senate’s Rules, Joint Rules, Resolutions, and Ethics Committee for recommending passage of Missouri’s U.S. Term Limit concurrent resolution (SCR14). SCR14 applies to Congress for the calling of an Article V convention of states to propose an amendment to the United States Constitution regarding term limits for members of Congress.

“This is an important step toward passing this legislation. The American people and the Missouri taxpayer overwhelmingly support term limiting their members of Congress. Out of self-interest, Congress will not pass an amendment limiting its own power, therefore it is left to the states to rein in the career Washington D.C. politicians. This is our chance to amend the U.S. Constitution to term limit Congress,” stated Carl Bearden.

According to a Missouri statewide poll conducted by McLaughlin & Associates last year, 85.5% of Missourians support a Constitutional Amendment that will place term limits on members of Congress. The polling showed that 59.5% of respondents strongly support U.S. Term Limits and 26% somewhat support the measure. The sample was comprised of 400 likely voters with 42% identifying as Democratic voters, 50% Republicans, and 8% undecided. 70% of respondents were reached by land line and 30% by cell phone.

“This is clearly a bipartisan issue. Missourians want change in Washington D.C. and that was demonstrated in the 2016 election cycle. With President Trump’s embrace of congressional term limits and Governor Greitens support for term limiting all statewide office holders the time is ripe for reform. Missouri should do its part by applying for a convention of states for the proposal of Congressional term limits. The Missouri Legislature has a historic opportunity. We will grade this issue in the 2017 United
for Missouri Scorecard.”
