JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – According to seasonally adjusted data released today by the Missouri Department of Economic Development, the state’s unemployment rate for September was 3.8 percent.
Following a revision to the August employment figures that showed a total decrease of 1,200 jobs, nonfarm payroll employment in September decreased by 10,500 jobs with the bulk of the reduction occurring in local government. Several industries experienced significant job growth over the month, including accommodation and food services which gained 2,500 jobs. Wholesale and retail trade saw the largest growth with 3,800 new jobs and support and waste management services was up by 3,500 jobs in September.
Over the past year, total nonfarm payroll employment has grown by 38,300 jobs. Missouri’s unemployment rate has now been lower than the comparable U.S. figure for 30 consecutive months. The U.S. unemployment rate in September was 4.2 percent.
