The Hot List — Oct. 31 Issue

Higher education funding could be HOT

In front of a crowd of about 100 higher education leaders, Gov. Jay Nixon announced last week that he has alloted funds in his Fiscal Year 2016 budget that could provide “substantial” increases for higher education funding. What those details mean? We will just have to wait and see.

St. Louis County politics are HOT

With city councilman Steve Stenger’s announcement of his run for St. Louis County executive, the bell has sounded for the state’s marquee primary of 2014. Stenger will be up against incumbent Charlie Dooley and as the Democratic primary nomination on Aug. 5 nears, all eyes are on both candidates.

Statesmanship is HOT

In lieu of 17-term Congressman Ike Skelton passing away, we wanted to take a second to remember him via the content on page five. Regardless of when you pick up this news magazine, the remembrance of Missouri’s former U.S. Representative is timeless, so take a second and reflect on his life.

Additionally, we wanted to commend the bipartisan nature of coming together after Skelton’s passing. Social media Monday night was heartwarming in his honor and we think that is well worth commending.

Gridlock is HOT

Conservatives are spending their fall season rewriting their tax cut measure while the suddenly more liberal governor is announcing he will fully fund the education formula. Hard to see the compromise there.

Reps. Jill Schupp and Casey Guernsey are HOT

They led their parties in open seat fundraising and neither has a top-tier opponent. But no measuring the drapes in those Senate offices just yet.
