Press Release: Gov. Nixon makes board and commission appointments

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Gov. Jay Nixon today announced his nominations to three boards and commissions. The nominees will be subject to confirmation by the Missouri Senate. The nominees, along with their boards and hometowns, are:

Missouri Ethics Commission (Gregory W. Weaver – Springfield)

Missouri Real Estate Appraisers Commission (Melba Curls – Kansas City)

Missouri Western State University Board of Governors (David G. Liechti – St. Joseph)

Missouri Ethics Commission

The Governor has nominated Gregory W. Weaver (D), of Springfield, to the Missouri Ethics Commission. The Ethics Commission receives and reviews complaints alleging violations of conflict of interest, lobbying and campaign finance disclosure laws.

Weaver is the lead paralegal instructor for Everest College in Springfield. He previously was an attorney in private practice in Springfield, and also was an attorney advisor for the Social Security Administration. Weaver received his law degree from the University of Missouri and his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Drury University. The Governor has nominated him for a term ending March 15, 2018.

Missouri Real Estate Appraisers Commission

The Governor has nominated Melba Curls (D), of Kansas City, to the Missouri Real Estate Appraisers Commission. The Missouri Real Estate Appraisers’ Commission licenses and regulates persons who engage in real estate appraisal business as set out in statute.

Curls currently is a city councilwoman for the City of Kansas City, and formerly represented the 41st District in the Missouri House of Representatives. She has served as a board member of the American Jazz Museum, the DeLaSalle Education Center, the Economic Development Corp. and the Jackson County Board of Domestic Violence Shelters. The Governor has nominated her for a term ending Sept. 12, 2014.

Missouri Western State University Board of Governors

The Governor has nominated David G. Liechti (D), of St. Joseph, to the Missouri Western State University Board of Governors. The Missouri Western State University Board of Governors establishes policies, by-laws, rules and regulations for its own government and for control and government of the University; to select, appoint, and remove a president of the university; to set admission standards; and to make decisions on financial matters.

Liechti is a managing member of the CPA firm, Liechti & Franken LLC. He served for eight years as a member of the Missouri State Board of Education; while on the state board, he also served on the Governmental Affairs Committee of the National Association of State Boards of Education. Liechti has served on several St. Joseph-area boards, including Heartland Regional Medical Center, the St. Joseph Board of Education, and the St. Joseph Area Chamber of Commerce. The Governor has nominated him for a term ending Oct. 29, 2019.
