PRESS RELEASE: Big Coalition of Missouri State Reps and Senators Endorse Eric Schmitt for Treasurer

Glendale, Mo. – A big coalition of Missouri State Senators and Representatives from across the state today called for the election of Eric Schmitt to be Missouri’s next Treasurer. The endorsement of 54 State Representatives and 19 State Senators so early in the election cycle highlights the far-reaching support for Schmitt. The endorsements come on the heels of Schmitt’s record-breaking fundraising quarter.

“If Missourians elect Eric Schmitt they will have an outstanding public servant fighting for them in the Treasurer’s office,” said State Senator Tom Dempsey, who serves as Senate President Pro Tem.  “It speaks volumes about Eric’s thoughtful approach to governing that so many elected leaders in the state legislature are standing up to support him.  As the author of two of the largest tax cut bills in state history and many other pro-growth, pro-jobs policies, Eric Schmitt has led the way towards private-sector job creation and economic growth for Missouri.”

“Missouri conservatives have an outstanding candidate for Treasurer in 2016 and I urge them to join me in supporting Eric Schmitt,” said State Representative Paul Curtman.  “In the State Senate, Eric Schmitt has championed conservative causes including balanced budgets, reducing the size of government and policies that lead to private-sector job creation.  Missourians can trust Eric Schmitt to be a true taxpayer advocate in the Treasurer’s office.”

“I am proud to stand behind Eric Schmitt and endorse his campaign for Missouri Treasurer,” said State Representative Sue Allen, who chairs the Appropriations Committee on Health, Mental Health and Social Services.  “I’ve worked closely with Eric advocating for children and adults with special needs. I can tell you firsthand that Missourians with special needs and their families have had no greater advocate than Eric Schmitt. I know he will take the same thoughtful and caring approach to advocating for taxpayers in the Treasurer’s office.”

“I am deeply honored to be endorsed by Missouri leaders from every region of our state,” said Schmitt. “They understand that we need a Treasurer who will take a more proactive role in protecting taxpayers and ensuring greater fiscal responsibility.”

As State Senator, Schmitt has been credited for his leadership as a next-generation conservative, bringing new energy and bold ideas to the forefront and seeking a new era of governance in which initiatives to create private sector jobs and restore fiscal responsibility will replace the big government model that has prevented growth and prosperity for Missourians.

Schmitt authored two of the largest tax cuts in state history.  Both were enacted into law.  To help create jobs and economic growth for the state, Schmitt sponsored a significant tax cut for small businesses, lowering the tax burden for all small businesses by 25 percent over five years.

He also sponsored legislation ending a double taxation known as the “corporate franchise tax” that was preventing Missouri businesses from expanding and discouraging out-of-state businesses from relocating here. Schmitt was also a key leader in enacting a significant tax cut for individuals and families, reducing their tax burden from 6 percent to 5.5 percent.
