Statement from Gov. Nixon on meeting with national and state NAACP leadership
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – On Wednesday, Dec. 3, Gov. Jay Nixon met with NAACP President Cornell Brooks in his office in the Capitol. The Governor invited Brooks and other national and state NAACP leaders to meet with him and key members of his administration including Dan Isom, Director of the Missouri Department of Public Safety, and former Senator Maida Coleman and Marvin Teer of the Office of Community Engagement.
“I was honored to meet with the leadership of our nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization during the march from Ferguson to the capital this week,” said Gov. Nixon. “For over a century, the NAACP has been a strong and powerful voice for justice and equality. Through honest dialogue and mutual respect, I’m confident that together we can make meaningful change to address the challenges underlying the events in Ferguson, and build a future of greater peace, opportunity and fairness for all.”
Other participants in the meeting included Adolphus Pruitt, President of the NAACP of St. Louis; Mary Ratliff, President of the Missouri NAACP; Carmen Watkins, National Director of Field Operations for the NAACP for the Western U.S., Kevin Myles, National Director of Field Operations for the NAACP for the Eastern U.S.; and Jamiah Adams, Vice President of Communications and Digital Media for the NAACP.
Former Sen. Coleman, who the Governor named as the director of the Office of Community Engagement, will address today’s rally of the NAACP at the Capitol as a representative of the Governor.
