LaFaver sponsors legislation to improve child care in Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – State Rep. Jeremy LaFaver filed House Bill 510 today which would require all child care facilities in Missouri to become licensed. Currently, Missouri allows thousands of child care operators throughout the state to operate without a license.

“In Missouri you need a license to cut hair and paint toenails, but not to operate a child care facility,” said LaFaver, D-Kansas City. “We have people giving kids medication without any regulatory oversight at all.  It’s only a matter of time before we have another serious tragedy on our hands.”

News outlets across Missouri for years have highlighted the number of child deaths at the hands of unlicensed, unregulated day cares. In large part, LaFaver’s legislation would close loopholes that allow certain facilities to skirt state regulators by claiming religious exemptions.
