Spence Jackson, former Schweich staffer, found dead

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Details are yet to be released, but sources have confirmed the death of Spence Jackson, seasoned politico and spokesman for late Auditor Tom Schweich.

Jefferson City Police Department told The Missouri Times they would be releasing a statement tomorrow morning, but declined to confirm or deny details. After initially being asked to comment, one JCPD spokesperson said the department had “gotten a lot of calls” about an incident involving Spence. Multiple sources have stated that Jackson’s death is being investigated as a suicide.

Jackson’s death is particularly shocking follow the suicide of his former boss last month, Auditor Tom Schweich. Sources close to Jackson relayed sympathy for the family and friends late Sunday evening, preparing themselves for the potential backlash. Sources relayed continued sadness and confusion at suicide and support for mental health improvements and support for a more benevolent political climate.

Jackson operated as a staff member politically and officially for various campaigns and offices including Republicans Gov. Matt Blunt and Treasurer Sarah Steelman. Recently, he had minimal reservations in calling for change within the Missouri Republican Party after his former employer’s death.

“Melanie and I are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Spence Jackson who was a good friend for many years,” said Gov. Matt Blunt in a statement. “Spence was a gifted communicator who dedicated his talents in public affairs to public service.  Over his career he served as chief spokesman for three of Missouri’s statewide offices including that of the governor when I held that post.  Spence was hard-working, well-liked and quick-witted.  He will truly be missed.  We mourn his passing and offer our prayers to his family and friends.”

Rumors of the communications operative’s death swirled with confusion in the late evening only to be all-but-confirmed by midnight. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch published an article just after midnight confirming Jackson’s passing.
