MISSOURI CHARTER PUBLIC SCHOOL COMMISSION NAMES FOUNDING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

March 30, 2015 – It is with great pleasure that the Missouri Charter Public School Commission names Robbyn Wahby as its founding executive director. “We believe under Robbyn’s leadership there is great potential for the Commission to set a foundation for innovation, collaboration, accountability, and impact for the children and families in Missouri,” says Commission Chair, Alicia Herald.

Robbyn started her career in the St. Louis Public Schools, was an elected school board member for SLPS, and has held other community based roles. She joins as the head of the Commission after her long-standing work in the Mayor’s Office of St. Louis. While the Deputy Chief of Staff, she has served as the senior advisor on education and children’s policy.

Since joining the Mayor’s office in 2001, she has lead the city’s K-12 school reform programs, including increasing the supply, access to and quality of charter schools, early childhood and afterschool programs, increasing college completion rates, and reducing youth violence.

“Robbyn Wahby’s appointment is a natural extension of the last 13 years of her work in my office,” St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said. “She has an undeniable passion for quality public schools for all children. Now, cities throughout Missouri will be gaining access to a great partner at the State level in Robbyn and the Missouri Charter Public School Commission to advance their communities’ interest in getting the best schools for Missouri’s children.”

Commissioner and long-time state legislator, Delbert Scott, says of the announcement, “We couldn’t have asked for a stronger, more experienced leader in the space. We feel with Robbyn we will hit the ground running as a Commission.”

Commissioner Peggy Lea Taylor, veteran board member from Nixa and former president of MSBA added, “We look forward to building and supporting a strong portfolio of charter schools across the state of Missouri that values innovation, partnership, and transparency.”

History of the Missouri Charter Public School Commission:

In 2012 the Missouri General Assembly established the Missouri Charter Public School Commission. “The Missouri Charter Public School Commission is hereby created with the authority to sponsor high quality charter schools throughout the state of Missouri (160.525.1).”
