Gov. Nixon signs bills to protect taxpayers

 

JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Jay Nixon today signed Senate Bill 18, which requires the Department of Revenue to notify affected businesses of changes in tax treatment for sales of tangible personal property.

“This common-sense bill will ensure affected businesses are given adequate notice when tax laws change,” Gov. Nixon said. “This is a fiscally-responsible, business-friendly measure that protects taxpayers, and I’m pleased to sign it into law today.”

Missouri has some of the lowest business tax rates in the nation, and last year was named a top 10 state for business for the fifth year in a row. Missouri ranks 8th lowest in per capita state corporate tax revenue and 5th lowest in state government tax revenue as a percentage of personal income

The Governor today also signed House Bill 517, which shortens the amount of time in which the Department of Revenue is required issue tax refunds from 90 days to 45 days after a return or overpayment claim is filed.

In addition to Senate Bill 18 and House Bill 517, the Governor also signed the following bills and resolutions:

House Bill 613, which updates and clarifies laws pertaining to delinquent property tax and real property tax sales, among other provisions;

House Bill 616, exempting short-term rental equipment from personal property taxes;

House Bill 361, designating the third week of February in Missouri as “Engineer Awareness Week;”

House Bill 402, designating the week before Memorial Day as “Missouri Safe Boating Week;”

House Bill 404, which expands the current designation of May 15th as “Missouri’s Peace Officers Memorial Day” to include the week in which the 15th falls as “Missouri’s Peace Officer Memorial Week;”

House Bill 859, designating April 15th as “Jackie Robinson Day;”

House Bill 567, designating December 4th as “Alpha Phi Alpha Day;”

House Bill 874, designating October 16 of each year as “Walt Disney – ‘A Day to Dream’ Day;”

House Bill 1119, designating the second Monday in April as “Missouri Lineworker Appreciation Day;”

Senate Bill 166, which changes the “I Have A Dream” specialty license place to the “Dare to Dream” license plate to address concerns about copyright infringement;

Senate Bill 405, which adjusts the county collector’s fee schedule for collecting state and local taxes in the county;

SCR 1, a resolution designating January as “Sex Trafficking Awareness Month” in Missouri.
