2018 Tip Sheet: House

House Races

Elected in 2010 – 43

The current breakdown of the huge 2010 class is 35 Republicans and eight Democrats. Interesting to note, that class is the same size as the junior class, which stands at 43 members. This was the class elected after Obamacare in the huge Republican wave and many Democrats have been waiting for this class to term out.

On the Republican side, they will have to defend the 11th where Rep. Higdon is term-limited, as well as in the 35th, where Rep. Cross sits. Those are probably the most likely pickups from this class. The 38th, where Rep. Berry is leaving, could be tough for Republicans if the Democrats can recruit a good candidate. The 97th in Jefferson County and the 116th in Farmington look tough on paper, but odds are the Republicans aren’t losing sleep on those races, barring a start recruiting job by the Democrats or a very bad year for the GOP.

Democrats start off with a tall order in keeping their last rural Missouri seat as Rep. Harris vacates the 118th. Currently, that seems the most likely seat in the entire House to flip.

Elected in 2012 – 43

The current breakdown of members elected in 2012 is 33 Republicans and 10 Democrats, and the limited number of targets here along with the fact that all 43 have been elected three times leads you to believe it will stay that way. The Democrats really have no seats in this class that are traditionally targeted by Republicans, but look for several Democrats to run in a primary against anti-labor representative Courtney Curtis.

On the Republican side, it appears that the 136th will be open as Rep. Austin is running for the Senate and will leave the heavily Republican seat open. We put Rep. Cloria Brown in this class as this is her third term and it’s fair that she could face a new challenger after running against former Rep. Vicki Englund for the better part of a decade.

Elected in 2014 – 36

The current breakdown of those elected in 2014 is 29 Republicans and seven Democrats. On the Republican side, every-cycle Reps. Corlew and Bayse have to face tough re-election fights. Last cycle’s Democrat pickup was from this class in Rep. King, but he was actually knocked off in the primary. Now, with Republicans needing only 82 votes to make bills laws, don’t look for such primary campaigns. It will be interesting to see if the Democrats even make efforts in their old strongholds of Jefferson County or the bootheel where Donald Trump finished off the few Democrats that were left after eight years of Obama. Outside of Corlew and Bayse, the traditionally targeted seats in this class are there. Also, it’s likely Rep. Dogan’s seat will be open as he is looking to run for St. Louis County Executive.

On the Democrats’ side, Republicans seem to always put up a fight for the Kirkwood seat held by Rep. Lavender and it looks likely that the 86th is open as Rep. Adams is running for State Senate.

Elected in 2016 – 40

The current breakdown of those elected in 2016 is 19 Republicans and 21 Democrats. There will be two Republicans added to this class after special elections in the 50th and the 129th are held making it 21 and 21. This might be the most impressive freshman Democratic class in over a decade, and there is work being done to focus their efforts on picking up seats, and without the burden of being the party of the president in power, maybe we have seen the bottom for House Democrats.

Before looking forward, they will probably have to put some resources into defending Rep. Beck and Rep. Unsicker, both of whom Republicans took runs at in 2016, but both should be re-elected in 2018. The Republicans will have to defend Rep. Matthiesen. It will be interesting to see if Democrats focus on a run at freshman Reps. Hannegan and Toalsen. If they are going to target seats in St. Charles or Boone County, they likely will.
