Ameren withdraws bid for new nuclear plant in Callaway County

Fulton, Mo. — Ameren Corp. officially withdrew its application for a second reactor at its Callaway County plant from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Warren Baxter, Ameren CEO, announced the decision earlier today on a conference call. Baxter cited “long term capacity needs,” and “the regulatory framework in Missouri,” as a few of the reasons to back away from the proposed project.

But Baxter also reiterated that the company continues to support nuclear power as “an important clean energy source for our company and country.”

The application before the NRC has been through various stages since 2008, and Ameren has long worked to convince lawmakers to change state law and allow them to bill customers while the plant was still being built. Those efforts have long proved unsuccessful.

Ameren Missouri is the state’s largest utility provider.
