St. Louis mayor endorses Zimmerman for attorney general

ST. LOUIS – Democrat Jake Zimmerman earned the endorsement of St. Louis’ highest-ranking government official Thursday in his bid for the attorney general’s office.

Mayor Francis Slay backed the St. Louis County Assessor over former Cass County Prosecutor Teresa Hensley of the in the Democratic primary.

“Jake is the best choice for attorney general,” Slay said in a statement. “He has been a tireless advocate for taxpayers and consumers throughout his career. Jake has consistently fought for fairness as county assessor, as state representative, and as a prosecutor before that.”

Zimmerman has served as an assistant attorney general under Gov. Jay Nixon’s administration, and he noted he was happy to have Slay backing him in the primary.

“I’m proud to have the Mayor’s endorsement and am honored by the trust he’s given me,” Zimmerman said. “The city and the region are better off for having him at the helm.”

The winner between Zimmerman and Hensley will move on to face the winner of the Republican primary, either state Sen. Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia, or University of Missouri law professor Josh Hawley.
