Schaefer closes office due to death threats

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Sen. Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia, closed his legislative office at the Capitol Tuesday after he and his staff received a death threat on the office’s voicemail.

The audio of the call can be listened to here at KMOX.com.

“People like you – people with your beliefs – many of us would rather string you up to (expletive-deleted) tree and hang you and (expletive-deleted) choke out and watch the life slip away from you because you want to ruin the lives of other people,” the unidentified man says.

The profane rant alludes to Schaefer’s current activity spearheading the work of the “Sanctity of Life” committee by demeaning Schaefer on his Christian beliefs.

Schaefer, a candidate for attorney general, told KMOX that he was taking the threat seriously.

The Capitol Police Dept. did not comment about ongoing investigations, but Rep. Mike Leara, R-St. Louis, said he is not taking any chances.

“In light of the threats made to Sen. Schaefer’s office, I will be requesting the Capitol Police provide heightened security for the Joint Committee on Public Employee Retirement hearing tomorrow.”

Leara chairs the committee, but Schaefer does not serve on it.
