SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – State Sen. Bob Dixon announced his decision to drop out of the race for governor Monday. His departure leaves Eric Greitens, Lt. Governor Peter Kinder, former Speaker Catherine Hanaway and businessman John Brunner in the race.
Dixon left with a brief outgoing message for his supporters.
“I thank those who truly believe we need to renew the Spirit of Missouri, and sincerely supported the campaign expecting nothing in return other than good, honest government,” he said. “Your authentic support inspired me every day. Together, I know we could have renewed the Spirit of Missouri and made our state a place of renewed freedom where no one, rich or poor, would settle for living off the backs or the work of others, but rather a place where all would be free to determine their destiny and enjoy the reward of their own labor.”
Dixon did not release any further statement about his decision to suspend his campaign.
The underdog of the field, Dixon announced his candidacy in July, but struggled to keep up with the massive fundraising capabilities and financial reserves of Greitens and Brunner while also lacking the name recognition of Hanaway and Kinder. Instead, the senator from Springfield attempted to make his record of fiscal conservatism in the state legislature the pillar of his campaign.
Dixon will not be endorsing any of the other candidates for governor at this time.
