JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Jay Nixon today announced that he has appointed longtime public servant John W. Briscoe (D), of New London, to serve on the State Highways and Transportation Commission. The Commission works to preserve, enhance, and support the state’s transportation system. The commission makes and tracks transportation policy and has authority over all state transportation programs and facilities, as provided by law, including bridges, highways, aviation, railroads, public transportation, ports, and waterborne commerce.
“From his more than 25 years as a county prosecuting attorney to his seven years on the Truman State Board of Governors, John has demonstrated both his desire and ability for public service,” Gov. Nixon said. “That experience and dedication will be put to effective use on the State Highways and Transportation Commission as it works in concert with the new MoDOT Director, Patrick McKenna, to address the vital and challenging issues faced by Missouri’s transportation system.”
Briscoe currently operates law practices in New London and Hannibal, as well as a land title company in Hannibal. He also manages the family farm, which includes row crops and a cow-calf operation. Briscoe served as Prosecuting Attorney of Ralls County from 1972 to 1980, and again from 1991 to 2004. He previously was Knox County Prosecuting Attorney for four years. Briscoe served on the Board of Governors of Truman State University for seven years. He is a past president of the Missouri Bar and was a member of the Missouri Bar Board of Governors for 12 years.
The Governor has appointed Briscoe for a term ending March 1, 2021. His appointment will be subject to confirmation by the Missouri Senate.
