Gov. Nixon makes appointments to MOHELA and Geology Registration boards

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Gov. Jay Nixon today announced his appointments to the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MOHELA) and to the Board of Geologist Registration. The three appointments will be subject to confirmation by the Missouri Senate.

The Governor has re-appointed Marvin E. (Bunky) Wright, of Columbia, to the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority of the State of Missouri. The mission of MOHELA is to eliminate barriers for students so they can access higher education.

Wright currently operates a general law practice in Columbia. He was general counsel to the University of Missouri System from 1998 to 2008. Wright also has served as legal counsel to the University of Missouri System, Stephens College, Columbia College, Westminster College and the Columbia Public School System. He is a member of the Board of Governors for the University of Central Missouri. Wright obtained his bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of Missouri. The Governor has re-appointed him for a term ending Oct. 22, 2019.

The Governor has appointed Stephen Douglas Bonney, of Kansas City; and Andrew J. Burkemper, of St. Louis, to the Board of Geologist Registration. The Missouri Board of Geologist Registration protects the public, licenses qualified professionals, enforces profession standards, and encourages development and partnerships with existing small businesses.

Bonney, who has been appointed as a public member of the board, is an arbitrator and mediator who also serves as the chief counsel and legal director of the ACLU Foundation of Kansas. He has practiced law in the Kansas City area for more than 30 years. The Governor has appointed Bonney for a term ending April 11, 2018.

Burkemper is a registered professional geologist as well as a certified project management professional. He currently is a geologist/project manager at PSC Industrial Outsourcing LP. Burkemper has done work on hydrogeology projects across the United States as well as in Australia and Antarctica. The Governor has appointed him for a term ending April 11, 2016.
