HANNIBAL, Mo. – Democrats from across the state flocked to Hannibal this past weekend to celebrate the annual Democrat Days celebration.
While the event served as an opportunity for Democratic candidates and party leaders to connect with constituents and voters, attendee Frederick Doss, the legislative assistant to Michael Butler,
“It really was a bit of a, I wouldn’t say a celebration, but a rallying cry for our statewide candidates and for some of the lower offices,” he said. “It seemed very well attended, better than previous years, probably because this year is an election year.”
Doss said the youth panel and seminar on how to serve as a delegate for the Democratic National Convention were big draws.
“A lot of people are very interested in becoming a delegate and wanting to represent their congressional district,” he said.

The people at the event also contributed to that “rallying cry” atmosphere. The Democratic gubernatorial candidate and current Attorney General Chris Koster; Secretary of State and candidate for U.S. Senate Jason Kander, State Auditor Nicole Galloway; candidates for state treasurer, Pat Contreras and Judy Baker; Secretary of State candidate Robin Smith; and candidate for lt. governor, Russ Carnahan, all made appearances and many state-level legislators attended as well.

Doss noted he was especially impressed with Koster and Galloway for their speeches during a brunch meeting and also with Contreras for his efforts to get millennials involved in this year’s election.
