Schmitt endorses Cruz for president

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – State senator and Republican candidate for treasurer Eric Schmitt endorsed Sen. Ted Cruz, R-TX, for president Friday afternoon on KMOX with Jane Deuker with a brief statement.

“We need a committed, trusted, new-generation conservative to lead our country as commander-in-chief, and that’s why I’m endorsing Senator Ted Cruz for President and am urging Missourians to support him in our state’s Republican Primary on March 15,” Schmitt said in a statement. “We need a president who will stand up and say enough is enough with the left trampling on our rights and expanding the size and scope of the federal government. And we need a president who will bring new and big conservative ideas to the White House.

“The American people want a president to advocate and articulate for the conservative principles that have served our country well since its founding. Senator Ted Cruz would be that president and I am honored to endorse him.”

While politicians across the state begin to throw their support behind certain candidates, the field has winnowed considerably since Republican leaders in both chambers announced their support for Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R). While many seem reticent to back frontrunner Donald Trump, second-place Cruz seems to be an increasingly popular choice for those on the right.
