JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Mike Parson, R-Bolivar, presented legislation that would allow newly retired military personnel with specialized training to acquire a commercial driver’s license (CDL) without having to take the written and driving test administered by the Department of Revenue.
Under Senate Bill 1078, the written and driving test for commercial driver’s licenses would be waived for military personnel with training in that area within one year of leaving active duty. The servicemen or women would have to show proof of their training. This legislation allows the Department of Revenue to promulgate rules to create the exemption.
“The legislation would allow military personnel with the proper training to forgo the CDL tests,” said Sen. Parson, “This lets them take real world skills and immediately use them to enter the workforce upon retiring from active duty. It’s a commonsense measure that helps our military members ease back into civilian life and apply what they’ve learned while serving our country.”
The bill is part of Sen. Parson’s concerted effort to support the military in Missouri. The legislation requires a final vote from the committee before going to the full Senate for debate. For more information, visit Sen. Parson’s official Senate website at www.senate.mo.gov/parson.
