Women’s Foundation releases “Best Practices” guidelines for equal pay

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Women’s Foundation released the findings from a University of Missouri school regarding best practices guidelines for businesses to ensure equal pay for women.

The University of Missouri Truman School of Public Affairs Institute of Public Policy was contracted by the Women’s Foundation to research how to address the gender pay gap, which has been at the front and center of recent debate over equality in the workplace.

“Women’s Foundation has worked tirelessly to advance the issue of equal pay since our research identified that women in Missouri are paid only 71 cents to the dollar that men earn,” said Wendy Doyle, the president and CEO of Women’s Foundation. “These guidelines serve as a practical tool to achieve equal pay for women.”

The guidelines dictate that employers should first discover if gender-based pay disparities exist while also rectifying any potential inequity. Then, the final guideline stresses transparency in the pay process.

That transparency includes making salary ranges for job titles public, eliminate penalties for discussion of pay and multiple evaluation processes when considering promotions or pay raises.

The Women’s Foundation has made waves in certain circles for their new initiatives to promote equity for women and girls. Last month, they were behind Gov. Jay Nixon’s executive order to effectively eliminate the wage gap in the executive branch of state government.

The final guidelines can be read here.
