TWMP: An exclusive interview with Sen. Bob Onder

On a very special episode of This Week in Missouri Politics from the Capitol, host Scott Faughn travels to Jefferson City to sit down with Sen. Bob Onder, the author of SJR 39, for an exclusive interview about the lightning rod legislation that divided the Capitol before failing to get out of a House committee Wednesday.

The two talk about Onder’s intent behind the resolution, his reaction to the business community’s opposition to the bill and the difficulty of getting the legislation passed without an actual case in the state of someone denying services for the purpose of a same-sex wedding.

“We were trying to get ahead so Missourians wouldn’t be punished,” Onder says before detailing one case in Oregon where such a thing has happened. “We didn’t have a case in Missouri to point to and that’s part of the challenge.”

The two later discuss some of Onder’s economic development efforts for blight-affected areas and to bring Uber to the state. They also talk about a bill that will have major implications for the energy industry in Missouri and his support of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in the Republican presidential primary.

This Week in Missouri Politics airs Sunday mornings on KRCG in Mid-Missouri at 6:00 a.m. and KDNL in St. Louis at 11:00 a.m., and is available online Sunday afternoons at twmp.tv.
