JEFFERSON CITY—Senator Mike Parson, R-Bolivar, recently received the Associated Students of the University of Missouri’s (ASUM) Legislator of the Year Award. The accolade is given to those lawmakers who have fought for legislative measures benefiting college students at public universities and the UM system.
“I’m honored to receive such a prestigious award. I’d like to thank the ASUM for the recognition,” said Sen. Parson. “We have to support our college students, who represent the next generation of Missouri leaders. I’m proud to fight on behalf of our UM system students.”
Senator Parson has long been an advocate in the Legislature for higher education institutions and their students. This year, Sen. Parson, as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, was critical in securing a 4 percent performance funding increase for the state’s public universities, including University of Missouri. The increase ensures tuition will not go up for the next fiscal year.
ASUM is a non-partisan, non-profit student lobbying organization that has been the student voice in government since 1975. Every student enrolled in the University of Missouri campus is a member. ASUM is involved in many political events on campus, assisting with voter registration, helping students with absentee ballots, organizing candidate forums, student issue surveys and the state internship program.
