Davis throws hat in the ring for majority whip

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Rep. Charlie Davis, R-Webb City, will run for the majority whip position being vacated by Rep. Delus Johnson, R-St.Joseph, who is running for speaker pro tem.

“I am making an announcement that I will be seeking the nomination as your Majority Floor Whip and I am asking for your vote and your support,” Davis wrote in an email to colleagues. “I have fought hard for our Republican Caucus and will continue for another two years as I have no opponent this election cycle.”

Davis says his experience in technology makes him a logical candidate for the position as vote whipping has become more technologically based over his time in the House.

“For the past 6 years, I have had the privilege of serving in this body. I have seen the whip position develop into a technical and efficient position due to the technical knowledge of Representative Delus Johnson. When I was first elected to the house, we saw many members as part of the whip team running around the chamber or our offices with pieces of paper trying to get the count before an important vote,” he emailed. “We have seen this process develop into a non-intrusive voting system that makes it easy to get an accurate vote count. As you know, I have been involved in technology for 35 years and I know the system that is currently being used. I believe the system works well. We need to continue to work to get accurate vote counts prior to a major vote. I believe I could be a great asset to our caucus as your whip.”

Davis has served in the House since he was elected in 2010 and is the chairman of the Veterans Committee.
