DOR gets more resources to fight fraud

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Department of Revenue (DOR) will be getting some extra resources to accelerate tax return processing this year.

Gov. Jay Nixon authorized DOR to implement overtime and bring in additional staffing and resources to help quicken the process.

“Our budget is balanced and our economy is growing. The Department of Revenue needs to process these returns as quickly as possible while continuing to protect Missourians from fraud,” Nixon said. “I appreciate the Department’s work to protect taxpayers from fraud, but we also recognize the need to give people their money back. That’s why I’m making sure they have the resources they need to get the job done.”

Nixon hopes the increased resources will help the department continue to fight fraud. It stopped more than $85.5 million in fraudulent returns last year.

The tax deadline was extended by a month for taxpayers who live in federal disaster areas, meaning residents of several counties might not have turned in their tax return until May 16.

Those counties are Barry, Barton, Camden, Cape Girardeau, Cole, Crawford, Franklin, Gasconade, Greene, Hickory, Jasper, Jefferson, Laclede, Lawrence, Lincoln, Maries, McDonald, Morgan, Newton, Osage, Phelps, Polk, Pulaski, Scott, St. Charles, St. Francois, St. Louis, Ste. Genevieve, Stone, Taney, Texas, Webster and Wright.
