Monticello drops out, will not seek fourth term

ST. LOUIS – State Rep. Genise Montecillo, D-Affton, said on Friday she will not seek re-election to a fourth term in the Missouri House and instead will return to teaching.

The St. Louis-area Democrat said in a statement Friday that she has accepted a teaching position at a private school in Webster Groves, which is an opportunity for her to do what she loves doing most – working with children.

“While I have been honored to represent the people of my district for nearly six years, the demands of this new job will not allow me to do both beyond the end of my current term,” Montecillo said. “As a result, I will be withdrawing my candidacy for re-election at the earliest opportunity.”

Montecillo is unopposed in the Aug. 2 Democratic primary for the 92nd House District. Because the statutory window for a candidate to withdraw has closed, her name will remain on the primary ballot. After the primary is held, Montecillo can then withdraw her candidacy, allowing the local Democratic Party committee to select a replacement candidate for the Nov. 8 general election.

Montecillo will serve the remainder of her current term, which runs through the end of the year.

Before she was first elected to the Missouri House in 2010, Montecillo taught in the Special School District for 24 years. Great Circle in Webster Groves, where Montecillo has accepted a position, is a statewide nonprofit that provides behavioral health services to children and families throughout Missouri, including services at multiple locations for students who need specialized instruction and therapy.
