Release: FACT CHECK: Senator Blunt’s Response to “Background Checks” Is to Ignore Jason’s Challenge and Mislead about Jason’s Record

COLUMBIA, Mo. – After Jason Kander’s “Background Checks” ad received bipartisan praise and challenged Senator Blunt to handle a gun the way Jason was trained in the Army, Senator Blunt responded with the same tired attack attempting to mislead Missourians. Senator Blunt’s latest attack ad is a clear indicator that he’ll continue using the same false and misleading narratives in an attempt to distract from his own poor record.

Jason Kander is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan who has never been afraid to break with his party when it was right for Missourians, including supporting a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, opposing the EPA’s clean water rule, opposing the closing of Guantanamo Bay prison and speaking out against President Obama’s executive actions on immigration. In the case of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Iran Deal, Jason was the first Democratic Senate challenger to express his opposition publicly.

On the other hand, Senator Blunt has voted to raise his own pay 12 times and lives in a $1.6 million Washington mansion. Senator Blunt has repeatedly sided with corporate special interests like his family’s clients over the interests of working Missourians.

“Senator Blunt’s response to Jason’s challenge is a weak attempt to mislead Missourians and hide his miserable record of putting Washington lobbyists and special interests before Missouri families,” said Anne Feldman, press secretary for the Kander campaign. “Jason has spent his career serving Missourians both at home and abroad in the military, while Senator Blunt has become part of the problem in Washington. Jason’s record is clear, and Missourians have seen him go to work for middle class families. All that Senator Blunt has to show for his nearly 20 years in Congress is 12 votes to raise his own pay and a history of putting Washington lobbyists before working Missourians. That’s why Senator Blunt is trying to smear Jason’s record instead of talking about his own.”

Jason supports the 2nd Amendment and has voted to protect those rights for law-abiding Missourians. In the state legislature, he voted for a resolution that proposed a state constitutional amendment to re-affirm the rights of gun owners, to lower Missouri’s concealed carry age to 21, and to lower the concealed carry age for members of the military to 18.
