AFL-CIO, AFP battle against Blunt, Kander

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – With less than a month to go before Election Day, the Senate race between U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt and Secretary of State Jason Kander may have become more competitive than once thought. For much of the race, Blunt was thought to be a shoo-in to retake his seat, but recent polls have shown Kander slipping closer.  The University of Virginia Center for Politics moved the race to “toss-up” from “leans Republican.” And last week, the National Journal reported that Blunt’s own internal polling showed him only up by one point, while the New York Times stated Kander may actually be ahead in both camps.

With the race tightening or already dead-even, two groups on the opposite sides of the political spectrum are ready to give resources to their favored candidates.

AFL-CIO will begin a mailer campaign to hit over 33,000 union households in Missouri in support of Kander. The mailers attack Blunt as a “no show” due to his relatively high missed votes rate in the Senate (50 missed votes out of 1198). Missouri AFL-CIO President Mike Louis said that Missourians deserve a senator that works hard for them.

“Sen. Blunt, who is paid by their tax dollars and mine, ranks in the ‘Top 10 No-Shows’ for work in the U.S. Senate and still gets his full paycheck,” Louis said in a statement. “Hard-working Missourians want to send a message this election cycle to Senator Blunt – you haven’t been doing your job, [and] you’re fired.”

However, Americans for Prosperity last week announced they have knocked doors or made phone calls to over 1,000,000 homes in Missouri, urging voters to not put Kander in office.

“Contacting over one million voters is a great milestone, but it’s not where we’re stopping,” said Jeremy Cady, the state director of AFP-Missouri. “We’ll continue to work around the clock to ensure Jason Kander is stopped from forcing Missouri families to pay more for his costly policies.”

The group also has a website called “Can’t Afford Kander” to attack his support of the Affordable Care Act, the energy policies of President Barack Obama, and other costly government programs.
