Greitens donor’s donor still a mystery

In July, the Missouri Times reported the $2 million donation to Republican Eric Greitens from the mysterious SEALs for Truth PAC set a state record for the single largest contribution in Missouri history.

After months of waiting, the state finally knows who funded the PAC – sort of.

A group called the American Policy Coalition gave $2 million to SEALs for Truth the same day SEALs for Truth turned it around and gave it to the Greitens campaign. SEALs for Truth’s October quarterly report to the Federal Election Commission can be viewed below.

So what is the vaguely named American Policy Institute? Their website reveals no answers. Beyond that site, there is no other information about the organization on the web, aside from a filing of incorporation with the Kentucky secretary of state in November of last year. David Langdon, who filed that statement, was featured in a Politico article titled “Meet the Suburban Ohio Lawyer Behind the Right’s Dark Money Making Machine” written last May.

Oct. 15 became a date to watch for those curious of the historic donation Greitens received in July. Since it came just three days after both the state and federal filing deadlines ad was filed federally, it allowed the SEALs for Truth to donate $2 million without releasing any information about its donors until three months later in the Oct. 15 quarterly report.

That timing meant waiting for three months to know who gave the single largest political donation in state history, which may have contributed to his late surge in the polls and subsequent win during the Republican primary.

The former Navy SEAL has urged Missourians throughout his campaign that he will increase transparency and reduce corruption in state politics as a staple of his campaign.
