TWMP: Gov. Jay Nixon and a closer look at Election Day

On a very special edition of This Week in Missouri Politics, Gov. Jay Nixon himself stops by for an in-depth interview with host Scott Faughn. The two speak on everything ranging from Tuesday’s election results, including his unique insight as a voter from Jefferson County into Donald Trump’s victory for the presidency.

“He hit a nerve, a populist, outsider nerve… and I just think that Missourians never warmed up to Secretary Clinton,” Nixon said. “It was never a race in which she was making progress, and so we always knew the Republican was going to have a wide avenue to run in Missouri.”

They also discussed his meetings with Gov.-elect Eric Greitens and how he will help him transition into the governorship.

Nixon also takes time to reflect on his last eight years in office, including his administration’s handling of the tornado in Joplin, maintaining the credit rating of the state, and the possible economic woes that may continue if tax cuts continue.

Later, Faughn welcomes Democratic strategist Jack Cardetti, Republican strategist Jack Spooner, Rep. Robert Cornejo and Rep. Marsha Haefner to the opinion maker panel to discuss the wild election night. They go over the Republican sweep of the statewide offices and how the Republican legislature is prepared for the state.

“People have high expectations now that we have the House, Senate and the Governor’s Mansion,” Haefner says.

They also discuss Greitens’ new administration, how he will apply his leadership skills in office, and what pitfalls he needs to avoid to keep the Republican Party on top for the next four years.

“When the guy over your right shoulder can save your life or you have to save his life, you learn to depend on people,” Spooner said.
