TWMP: Trump’s America, right-to-work, and the budget crunch

On a full opinion maker panel episode of This Week in Missouri Politics, host Scott Faughn welcomes Republican political consultant Jonathon Prouty of Hancock and Prouty; Jeff Mazur, the director of public partnerships at Launch Code; former House Speaker Steve Tilley; and Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis to discuss life under Pres. Donald Trump. They debate the challenges he will face in his first term, whether he can maintain his momentum in blue-collar dominated states like Missouri, and what he can do to unite a divided country, especially since he is such a divisive figure himself.

“At the end of the day, he’s going to have to step up to the plate and prove himself to be a president for all,” Nasheed said, adding later that Trump would be a “disaster” for Missouri

The discussion then turns to Missouri’s economy, specifically Gov. Eric Greitens’ State of the State address and his budget cuts Monday. The panel speaks about the impact of those budget cut, whether the Republican legislature or the Democratic former Gov. Jay Nixon is to blame for the state’s financial woes, and Greitens’ role going forward on the issue.

“Whether you agree with him or not, you look at him and think this is a decisive leader,” Tilley said. “He saw the problem, and he addressed him.”

They also discuss right-to-work and the likelihood of U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill’s future run for re-election and her potential opposition.
