Greitens names PricewaterhouseCoopers partner as new Dept. of Revenue chair

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Gov. Eric Greitens named Joel Walters, a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers, as the new head of the Missouri Department of Revenue Tuesday morning.

Walters currently serves the global business auditing firm’s tax leader on inbound tax practices where he helped non-American businesses operate within American tax schemes. He previously worked as the corporate finance director for Vodafone, overseeing the company’s global tax issues.

Greitens touted Walters’ outsider credentials – the inbound director of DOR has never held a government position – and added Walters would fight against “special interests.”

“Joel Walters has spent his career helping businesses understand tax and business environments around the globe so that they can grow and create jobs,” Greitens said in a statement. “Joel will be a key member of our team and a leader in our fight for taxes that are simple, fair to everyone, and low.”

Walters said he was eager to alter Missouri’s tax structure to help grow the state’s economy.

“I’m looking forward to working with the Governor to create jobs and ensure that Missouri’s tax system encourages businesses to come and invest in our people,” Walters said. “I’ve seen the damage that over burdensome taxes can have on job creation, and seen the global competition for jobs firsthand. We’re going to take those lessons and put them to work fighting for the people of Missouri to win jobs back to this state.”
