TWMP: Rehder and money in the Capitol

On Sunday’s episode of This Week in Missouri Politics, featured guest Rep. Holly Rehder speaks about the big developments with her prescription drug monitoring program bill this past week, this year’s House budget process, ethics legislation, and she makes a big announcement about her bid for leadership in the Missouri House of Representatives. Rehder says running for Speaker is “in the cards.”

“I’m a business woman, I’ve spent many years being successful at home, and building jobs at home and right now we have a wonderful opportunity with a Republican governor to get many of these policies passed that we’ve vetted for years,” she says. “I think having a businessperson at the helm is going to be very important because the policies we’ve been working on that we haven’t been able to get passed, many of them are labor reform, tort reform, things that really touch the business community.”

On the opinion maker panel, host Scott Faughn welcomes UFCW 655 President Dave Cook, Democratic operative Patrick Lynn, former Rep. John Mayfield and Rep. Jean Evans, R-Manchester. The group discusses the FBI investigation of conflicts of interest of HELP Inc. and the Missouri Department of Transportation and the Missouri Highway Patrol, as well as Rehder’s announcement of her run for Speaker and whether or not Gov. Eric Greitens was weighing in behind closed doors on the race.

“The rumor was in the hallways. The chatter was if the governor wants to weigh in on the Speaker’s race, he should run for state rep.,” Evans says. “I respect the governor. This is not something where I feel like his position would be well-received.”

They talk about the U.S. Senate race coming up in 2018, the best Republican to dethrone Claire McCaskill, as well as ethics legislation and transparency concerns in the Capitol.

“Money’s like water, it always finds a way,” Lynn says.
