Galloway contender for EMILY’s List award

State Auditor Nicole Galloway reached out to supporters this morning by email, announcing and also asking for support in her selection as a nominee for the EMILY’s List 2017 Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award.

Named in honor of former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, the Rising Star Award celebrates “an extraordinary woman serving in state or local office,” which many around the state consider Galloway to be.

The EMILY’s List description of Auditor Galloway reads, “As Missouri’s watchdog for government transparency and accountability, Nicole holds public officials accountable to citizens, uncovering millions in waste and fraud. She has shined a light on issues that impact families, including college affordability and cybersecurity in schools. The only Democratic state officeholder serving in deep red Missouri, Nicole has led on family-friendly policies such as paid parental leave. Earlier this year she became Missouri’s first statewide office holder to have a baby while in office.”

The organization’s tagline is “ignite change,” but their mission statement reads, “We ignite change by getting pro-choice Democratic women elected to office,” a statement that could ruffle feathers in Missouri, where those elected were overwhelmingly red and predominantly not pro-choice last November.

EMILY’s List, created in 1985, is one of the largest national resources for women in politics with the mission of funding campaigns for pro-choice Democratic women. The name “EMILY’s List” began as an acronym for “Early Money Is Like Yeast”, i.e. it makes the dough rise, referencing that major donations early on attract more donations later.
