ST. LOUIS — On Wednesday, June 19, NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri and Reproaction held a visibility action in front of Birthright, one of 69 unregulated crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) in Missouri funded through tax credits and federal TANF funds allocated to states with the intention of feeding hungry children. This action is part of the “Expose Fake Clinics Week of Action” campaign happening nationally.
CPCs are anti-abortion facilities that give medically inaccurate information to women and families seeking out reproductive health care. Both NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri and Reproaction have been leading efforts across Missouri to bring to light the dangers of anti-abortion fake clinics.
“Enough is enough. We are tired of our tax-payer dollars being used to lie to and shame women for making their own personal, private reproductive health decisions,” said Kirstin Palovick, Organizing and Policy Associate of NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri.
“It is unacceptable that Missouri prioritizes giving fake clinics millions in tax dollars while there are neighborhoods in the state with an infant mortality rate that is worse than some developing countries, like Uzbekistan and Vietnam. Enough is enough,” said Pamela Merritt, co-director of Reproaction.
The Expose Fake Clinics Week of Action goes from July 17 through July 26. More info and statistics on CPCs across the nation can be found at https://exposefakeclinics.squarespace.com/.
NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri is the state’s largest grassroots pro-choice organization. We have been working to protect choice and a woman’s right to a full range of reproductive health care for over 40 years. Our mission is to develop and sustain a constituency that uses the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children and choosing legal abortion.
Reproaction is a new direct action group forming to increase access to abortion and advance reproductive justice. Reproaction is proud of their left-flank analysis, and are not in this fight to protect the past or maintain the status quo. They believe that the current state of abortion access—the closed clinics, financial barriers, insulting hurdles, baseless religious exemptions, and terrorism against providers—is a degrading, man-made humanitarian crisis.
