Planned Parenthood Advocates denounces Missouri Senate for passing politically motivated, medically unnecessary restrictions on safe, legal abortion

Unnecessary, $20,000-a-day special session costs could have provided access to health care for hundreds of Missourians

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Today, the Missouri Legislature took one more step toward eliminating access to safe, legal abortion in the state. Senate Bill 5 is a clear and deliberate attempt to skirt the constitutional rights of Missourians to access abortion services. The Supreme Court of the United States along with federal district courts in Missouri have already defined medically unnecessary restrictions against abortion as unconstitutional.

In response to the Missouri Senate’s passage of Senate Bill 5, Planned Parenthood Advocates in Missouri Director of Policy and Organizing M’Evie Mead released the following statement:

“Missouri’s abortion laws are already some of the most restrictive in the nation. Federal courts have blocked some of those medically unnecessary restrictions. This political theater is an expensive and ideological ploy to end abortion access in the state. The notion that this session has any benefit for patients’ health and safety is nonsense, and Missourians are smart enough to know that.”
